How to make a file run automatically on download

I have the same question 8. Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. Paulo GM Independent Advisor. Hi Adigo75, I am Paulo. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to Paulo GM's post on October 12, Thanks for the reply.

I found that setting but this will download to the default location without being able to change the file name. Before the change the file saving window popped up and I could change the file name before saving, so I still could identify the file when I searched for it later.

Yup, the old mimeTypes. The prompt now defaults on "save file" and the checkbox for "do this automatically for files like this from now on" is clickable once more. Seems weird that a reset of Firefox would do something like that, but at least it works again for me. It appears something went wrong in regenerating the default mimeTypes. First time I've heard of that, but without a lot of experimentation, I'm not sure we could get to the bottom of it.

I have just the opposite problem, how do I get Firefox to notify me when downloads are complete, show me where they are and offer me a chance to run them? It used to do it, now I often forget I downloaded something because it does it in the background and I have to go chase down the "download" folder which I can hardly ever find.

Hi timlturner, if you are running Firefox 20 or later, there should be a green downloads arrow on the toolbar that lists your recent downloads. This article has more information: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox. This was the solution I needed. Did a reset and when downloading RAR files the "do this automatically" was greyed out. In some cases, the name of the file that is stored on the web server is not the most useful to the user.

As of this post, all major desktop browsers excluding Microsoft IE support the download attribute. It is likely that people who use these browsers would likely rather view the document rather than saving it to their phone.

New to HTML 5. This markup is easier to understand and is supported by all modern browsers, but may not be supported by all content management systems.
